VMI Keydets compete in the Southern Conference, representing Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. Playing at Foster Stadium, VMI runs option-based offense with military discipline. The program develops future military officers while maintaining competitive football, creating unique dual mission similar to service academies. VMI has celebrated conference championships while producing military leaders. The red, white, and yellow colors represent distinctive Virginia military branding. Under their coaching staff, the Keydets emphasize disciplined, option-based offense and physical play. The program recruits student-athletes willing to embrace military institute lifestyle while competing in SoCon football. VMI maintains important conference rivalries while upholding military traditions as the nation's oldest state-supported military college. The Keydets serve as source of pride for the institute and Lexington. VMI football represents military discipline and Southern Conference tradition, combining option offense with the character development that defines military college athletics while developing future officers who embody both athletic achievement and military leadership throughout the historic Shenandoah Valley setting.
